Monday, May 6, 2002 Arizona News There is a new organization in Arizona to help riders get bike parks!
Check out a psychicflyingmonkey.com to learn about the Arizona Concrete Bike Alliance and check out help get bikes in pubilc skateparks. 5/1/02: From Raymond Putnam Raymoto17@aol.com Yesterday I sent you an update on our new plan to go to the Tempe City Council to try again to get access to the new skatepark. I asked that people contact council members Barb Carter and Mark Mitchell at http://www.tempe.gov. We only have about three weeks till the council may vote to expend funds, please post my message as soon as possible in your news section. Also we are in the process of talking to other park design/builders to get ideas on other alternatives. If you have any questions please contact me at Raymoto17@aol.com or Jason Ryan at oldeschool@angelfire.com. Thank you in advance......Raymond Putnam. After a close 4-3 vote by Tempe's Parks and Rec. Board our hopes of getting bikes in Tempe's new park looked pretty slim. After considering our options we have decided to continue our efforts by taking our fight to the Tempe City Council. The Council has to vote to expend the funds for the new park and as the Parks and Rec. Board is only advisory in nature, the council may change or amend the design plan as they see fit. In other words we are not done yet! Matt was right, we were promised a small amount of funds in the future, but let's continue to push for access to the main park. I am asking all Tempe area riders to E-mail council members Barb Carter ( barb_carter@tempe.gov ) and Mark Mitchell (mark_mitchell@tempe.gov ). Be polite but let them know how unfair it is to lock us out of this publicly funded park. We are also working to arrange a face to face meeting to explain our side. I would also like to take a moment to thank Matt Mueller, Jason Ryan, Josh Bierman, and anyone else who attended the Parks and Rec. Board meetings or helped in any way. If you have questions or suggestions contact Raymoto17@aol.com or oldeschool@angelfire.com. We appreciate and need your help.........Raymond Putnam. MORE AZ NEWS: From SMBIKER4130@aol.com : The city of Glendale with major support form councilman Phil Liberman has set aside $10,000 for a bike only park that will be built on 59av. and Bethany Home Rd. which is on the west side of town. If all goes well, the park will be done by next October, but we still need funds. If you can help in any way, please contact me or Rex , There will also be a skate/bike park built on 67th av. and Northen Rd. which is right up the street (20min riding distance), but that will not be done for 3 years. Hopefully other cities in az will see this example and build bikeparks in their cities. Later AZ FOR LIFE, Seth P.S. I printed over 40 pages off your resources page and they made great ammo. 4/10/02: From Matt Mueller Last night the Tempe Parks and Rec. board ruled that bikes would not be allowed in the future Tempe public skatepark. It was a close vote of 4-3. On the positive side the board did decide to allocate $50,000 for the construction of a seperate bike only facility. This translates to steel and masonite ramps stuck in a parking lot... not quite the same but we should be grateful for anything we can get... Special thanks to Ray Putnam for all his hard work and dedication to the cause, and also Jason Ryan thanks for listening. We will keep you posted as to any new developments. 1/10/02: From Brandon Klar On Tuesday Jan 8, 2002 there was a meeting with the city of Tempe parks and rec. advisory board. Somehow the word got out to the BMX community that it would be regarding a skatepark that was being developed. Quite a few riders showed up hoping to secure BMX access to the park. Unfortunately, at this meeting the board was unable to officially discuss the matter because the subject was not on the agenda. However, they did give anyone a chance to speak if they wanted to and seemed very receptive to what was being said. The board was able to say that they had hired a risk assessment analyst and were prepared to hire a design team (SDG?) if they could get funding for the park. The board also put the subject on the agenda for the next meeting. It will be held on Tuesday, February 12, at 7:00 p.m. on the second floor of the Tempe City library. The point of this mail is a call to action of all the Phoenix area riders to show up at this meeting. There is a much greater chance of us getting in this park than Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Scottsdale, or Phoenix because unlike the others that we came in late on, we are involved with this from the get-go. So get down to this meeting so this board can see that there is a real demand for BMX in the skatepark. OLD NEWS: 6/2001: Arizona Riders: If you want access to the park, you need to show up at this meeting! This is the last meeting before park opens, therefore it is your last chance for BMX to be included. More info: The new YMCA in-ground concrete skate park will be the first in Tucson. The park will be 14,000 square-feet. Contruction has begun and the park is scheduled to open in July 2001. For more information on the push for bike access to this park, contact Jason Pageau.
